Acrylic Color Wheels: For this assignment, I painted two color wheels in creative ways; The one on the left is supposed to resemble a clock, and the one on the right is just a mixture of different shapes and sizes, accentuating the three primary colors. The one on the left is using the warmer toned colors, and the one on the right is using the cooler toned colors. It was very interesting seeing the difference in colors for each color wheel, and how they are affected by the warm and cool colors.
Acrylic Practice Painting: For this assignment, I painted a small practice painting for the acrylic paint unit. I painted this photo of pumpkins to the best of my ability, using only primary colors, white, and black. I enjoyed this mini painting assignment, and learned a lot throughout the process, in terms of shading, shadows, and just mixing colors to get my desired ones.
Hundertwasser/ Klimt Inspired Acrylic Painting: "Peculiar Pumpkin Patch" For this piece I was assigned to paint a Hundertwasser/Kilmt inspired painting. I began by brainstorming ideas. This included ten individual ideas, but my top four were, " River with lily pads and surrounding vegetation, Pumpkin patch landscape with barns and buildings, Building landscape with a starry sky, moon, and constellations, and Lizard or chameleon (surrounded by vegetation, bodies of water, various plants". I ended up doing the pumpkin patch of course :)
As I do believe that my final painting is neat and well executed, I also believe there are some areas that could be neater. Overall, I think the lines are pretty sharp (with the help of the sharpies!), but the branches on the tree could be sharper and cleaner. I do think that the pumpkins are the "cleanest" part of my piece, as they are all opaque, and sharply rounded. I think my work embodies the artist's style through the individual patterns I incorporated into this piece. If looked at closely, there are seven different patterns of lines, dots, shapes, etc... I think the patterns are what really connects my piece to the artist's. There are a lot of colors in my piece! I tried my best to choose colors that were complimentary to each other. For example, the sky and tree; The complimentary color of orange is blue, and the complimentary color of yellow is purple. I then added a dark green on the left hill, so that a new bright color wouldn't be introduced into the scene. I chose a monochromatic color scheme for the grass, and added warm highlighting with the gold sharpie. For the pumpkins, I decided to use a warm color scheme to stand out from the grass, but also connect with the colors of the sky. Lastly, I made the garage blue, because it corollated with the tree and sky as well. The focal point of my piece is the spiraled tree, with its long curvy branches, multi-colored trunk, beady eyes, and textured/spiraled body. I used textures and patterns to embellish my artwork throughout this piece. Using both silver and gold sharpies, I was able to add shape, sharpness, texture, and pattern. For example, I drew curved shapes onto the dark green hill to the left, to give it a more "natural" shape. For the pumpkins, I simply added pattern for character, and for the grass, I added dots and lines to add texture to the ground. I also added the gold in the sky to make it more busy, as the artist's work were very busy as well. I incorporated spirals into my work in the sky, and in the tree. It enhances my work by adding personality and character. The spirals on the tree represent the texture, lines, and indentations on a tree, and the spiral in the sky could be seen as either a sunrise or sunset, because of the warm hues. Some difficulties I had creating this artwork were keeping the lines clean, and spending a lot of time adding multiple coats to each individual section. I also had a hard time recreating the same colors after running out of them. Certain times, I would have to change the color all together, because I couldn't match it correctly. I was also constantly cleaning up lines, adding more and more coats each time. Some successes I had were the pumpkins, the grass, and the tree. I specifically believe the pumpkins were a success, because of how nicely the colors go with the piece. In general, I feel like the color choices throughout my piece were pretty successful. Planning and revising sketches to achieve desired outcome is very important in the painting process. Often times, I was lost, because I ended up changing many things from my color sketch. If my final color sketch was planned out better, the production of my final painting would have been smoother. I can use what I learned from this painting to enhance my future paintings by planning better, working at a slower pace, keeping a steady hand to have clean lines, etc... Overall, I enjoyed painting this piece and incorporating both Hundertwasser and Kilmt's styles into my artwork!
