I really enjoyed the value drawing unit, and the new techniques I've learned. Some of the practice we've done to learn different types of value and composition is, drawing spheres, value scales, practice drawing with charcoal and graphite pencils, and other practice drawings like eyes.
I unintentionally chose both medias thinking they were the same, but the majority of what I used was graphite, and only did shadows with the charcoal. I chose graphite because I enjoyed using the blending stubs to get a smoother look. I also chose it, because I felt like I could control the shading better, and have more gradient blending too. I made my composition interesting by adding shadows on both the top and bottom of the shells, and on the creases and the inside of the shells as well. I used weighted pencils for some of the shading to get the darkest colors in the inside and blend it lighter on the outside.
Through the process of my drawing, I learned that charcoal is better for blending, and the use of darker value, and that graphite is more beneficial for lighter art and light shading. The weighted pencils helped me achieve the perfect value for the shells. I also learned that composition is very important to the size of the paper, and the size and angle of the drawing.
Some problems I solved working on my art includes getting the perfect shape for the shells. I had a hard time angling them and getting the round but also rigid shape. I redrew the shells many times just to get them perfect. I also had some trouble with the patterns on the shell, and the shading a little too. Although the shading was difficult, that is what I'm most proud of. Overall, drawing the shells was very fun for me, and I really enjoyed the different types of media and values to get the perfect look!

For my observational, drawing I simply used pencil to replicate a picture of my mom and I when I was a baby. We were at a wedding, and fooling around taking pictures. In the first picture you can see that I outlined our jaws and face structures to match the picture. I also chose to make my drawing a bit more zoomed in.
I chose graphite as my media. I've always enjoyed this media, because it makes for nice shading, and blends well too. To make this the best I could I focused a lot on facial features, and tried to make them as symmetrical as possible.
Some problems I faced while drawing this were resembling the facial features as well as I could. I also had a little trouble replicating my mom's curly hair, as it it very textured. I think the most successful thing about my work is that I captured the expression on our faces through shading.
Overall, I'm proud of my artwork, because it shows a memorable day for my mom and I, and was very fun to draw. I enjoyed doing the shading and capturing our joyful expressions.

For my everyday object drawing I decided to draw a clear vase and pick flowers from my mom's garden as the everyday object. I chose this specific combination of flowers, because the colors compliment each other. Also, the arrangement of the flowers create a 3D look to my art work.
I used graphite and black and grey colored pencils, because the neutral colors add depth in the shading. I blended all of the colors together with my finger to get a "glassy" look for the vase, and made the stems darker to make them stand out against the lighter grey's. I think the neutral colors add a beautiful darkness to the work. I chose this media, because graphite always blends well and makes smooth shading. I made my work the best I could, by making the darker colors solid and the lighter shades smoother.
A problem I faced while drawing this, was getting the black as solid as possible. That's when I decided to get my colored pencils. I believe the most successful things about my work are the shadings and the specific colors of the flowers, I think the flowers really compliment each other, because the white and yellow flowers add pop to the darker reds, pinks, and purples.
This was a very fun art piece to draw, and I really enjoyed picking the flowers.
