For this assignment, I was told to paint a landscape painting, replicating the style of a famous artist. I chose Paul Cezanne, a French artist who was known for his lead in the Post Impressionism period in terms of art. Four main ideas I used from his style of art are cubism, heavy brush strokes, thick layers of paint, and the "violent" style of his art. When I was told this painting had to be an original photo, I immediately asked all of my friends to send me their best landscape pictures. I found my absolute favorite from my friend Meera, and chose that one. Some of the other options were a cave landscape, a canyon, a water landscape, and a landscape with water and mountains together. I would this painting is well executed, and as neat as it can be, regarding the replication of Paul Cezanne's artistic style. My favorite part of my piece is the grassy field. I love how it turned out, and how the greens compliment each other so nicely. Although the sky doesn't replicate his style as much as I wanted, I really love how it turned out, and how there are shades of purple, pink, green, white, and even yellow. The most difficult part of this painting was figuring out the types of strokes I had to do. Because Cezanne has many different styles, I wasn't able to figure out how to execute it onto my painting. I then asked my teacher for some help, and after she demoed some brush strokes for me, I finally got the hang of it. Cezanne's work tends to bring out unusual color in simple things. Therefore, I really tried to replicate that by adding blues to the mountains, greens to the sky, and pinks to the grass on the mountains as well. I definitely could have dulled down the colors more, which would've resulted in a more Paul Cezanne look. The style of my artist is reflected in my painting in all of the land aspects. The mountains, grass, shadows, and houses all remind me of his work. I love the way the colors compliment each other throughout the piece, I feel like Cezanne's work always compliments well, in terms of colors. To be honest, I think my artist would giggle at my painting. I think that he would think my attempt to replicate his talent was funny. He would definitely say to fix the sky, and neaten up the houses. I feel like he would also recommend to dull down the colors. I think the main thing he would tell me is to produce more consistent brush strokes. If I were to do this project differently, I would plan better. Plan, plan, plan. I know, for a fact, that if I had done this, the progression of this painting would've went a lot smoother. I would also test the colors before putting them directly onto the canvas, because I feel like I would've had more accurate shades. Overall, this was a very enjoyable painting to paint, and I really liked trying different techniques to recreate the style of Paul Cezanne.
